Been watching Orangutan Diary on BBC all week and I have absolutely fallen in love with these wonderful animals.
They are so close to extinction though, mainly due to their rainforest homes being destroyed for palm oil plantations. It makes me so mad that these animals' homes are being taken from them. How would us humans like it if our homes were taken away?
But it's so easy to point the finger of blame at the people who are doing it.. the workers on the palm oil fields.. it's so easy to say "just tell them to stop" but they're only trying to make a living, trying to make enough money to feed their family, to survive.
It's commericalism at its worst.
It's heartbreaking to think that if deforestation isn't stopped they could be extinct by 2012.
Orangutan Diary is filmed at the The Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation Sanctuary at the minute they have around 600 orangutans who have been taken from people keeping them illegally from pets or ones that have been saved from their forest homes just before it gets burnt down. They look after them and spend years teaching them how to be proper orangutans so they can be released back into the wild, but it's hard finding protected land to release them to.
So they're having a hard time releasing them and the number of orangutans coming into the sanctuary is increasing which is bad news. The sanctuary is over its holding capacity and is running out of money.
It makes me feel so helpless. I mean apart from donating money there is nothing else I can do.
And this is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of endangered animals. There are so many more organisations that need money and help to save other animals who are also close to enxtinction.. and also organisations that help abandoned pets such as the RSPCA.

I watched a programme on endangered animals and I have never been more ashamed to be human but also proud to be human at the same time. It saddens me how some people don't seem to care about animals and as a result these animals are on the brink of extinction, but it was so heartwarming to see that people still care and people are still trying to help. There was a man who had been attacked by a tiger and had lost his eye because of one yet he still loves them and risks his life going on anti-poaching patrols trying to save them... now that is one amazing man.
Animals like the polar bear, the orang utan, the Asian elephant and the Bengal tiger are going to be extinct by the end of the century because of mankind if something doesn't happen to help.
I have lost all hope for the polar bear though. How can you get the whole world to change it's attitudes? How can you stop global warming? The polar bear is going to be the first one to suffer becuase of global warming and it had done nothing wrong. We're the ones causing it.
I have never ever felt so absolutely heartbroken.
Sometimes I think that humans were the worst thing to happen to this planet.
So many animals are being endangered because of human activity and it just upsets and angers me so much - why can't people see how beautiful and important animals are? Why don't people realise that they have as much of a right to be here as we do?
Humankind is overpopulating the world and becoming too greedy and the natural world is suffering.
It makes me want to say "screw uni" and try and get a job helping out conservation charities straight away. But I know that is not sensible.
I just want to help these beautiful amazing animals before it is too late.

I think that when you eat outside and breath in air food is tastier.. or is it just me? |

Oh this is awful!
There's a poor little Syrian hamster in between my garden fence and my next door neighbour's little garden wall.
Me and my dad have been up for almost an hour trying to get it and it's now 1am and we've had to intrude in our neighbour's garden, eek!
It must have a little hole that it's hiding in as my dad went to get something to catch it in but it's gone :(
I put some food down for it but I don't think there's anything else we can do. It's horrible because it must be freezing and terrified.
If only it would come out! |
